Ex-Home Depot Worker to File Religious Discrimination Lawsuit
from The Christian Post

A former Home Depot worker plans to sue the American retailer after he was fired for wearing a religious button.

Trevor Keezer, who wore a "One nation under God ... indivisible" button for over a year, was let go last week for violating the company's dress code.

"It feels kind of like a punishment, like I was punished for just loving my country," Keezer of Okeechobee, Fla., said, according to The Associated Press.

Since March 2008, Keezer has worn the button to support his brother who was headed for Iraq and to express his Christian faith. But it was when he began bringing his Bible to work to read during his lunch break that his manager confronted him, as reported by WPTV News Channel 5.

The 20-year-old employee, who was saving up for college, was told not to wear the button to work. He was offered other buttons sanctioned by the company, including one that states "United we stand," but Keezer refused them.

"You can't have a country without God," he recalled telling the manager, according to the local news channel.

Home Depot spokesman Craig Fishel explained that the issue is not whether they agree with the message on the button. The dress code states that only company-provided pins and badges can be worn on the work aprons, Fishel said, as reported by AP.

Keezer has hired Palm Beach attorney Kara Skorupa who plans to file a religious discrimination lawsuit next week.

"There’s nothing wrong with having a policy with a dress code," Skorupa told WPTV. "Obviously there are companies that have that and they should have that, but when you use that to punish someone because of their belief system then it becomes something else."

"There are federal and state laws that protect against religious discrimination. It's not like he was out in the aisles preaching to people," she added.

She also noted that the message on Keezer's button was taken straight out of the Pledge of Allegiance which is part of the United States' "historical fabric."

Comments:

It is a nuisance that my comments here are in wrong order. You have to plan the comment and cut in pieces before ...other wise it is sometimes awkward.

In addition: of course expressing as a Christian should not be in an INTENDED provocative way. But those who hate the Lord are provoked anyway. The Pharisees were offended by Jesus Christ. In the end they murdered Him at the cross for not submitting to théir system!

Jesus Christ told us in His Word John 15 & 16 (look up the verses yourself) that the world would HATE us, and those religious ones...so called brethren would throw us out of the synagogues (read: churches) and even murder us, thinking they would do God a service in doing so!

He made one thing clear: They did not and do not know Him nor His Father! (Read also John 8:44; Matth.7:21-23; 5:13; James 4:4; Rev.3:16) Otherwise they would love Him and us! They are not fór Him but against Him and against us!

Anti-christ: the Jews & the muslims: 1 John 2:22,23. For they reject the Son of God, Jesus Christ!

Hello!
Most Christians in the West have no experience with persecution for believing, living and expressing as a Christian. Because they are just like the world, blend in with the world...and the world loves it's own! (John 15,16) They do not express themselves as Christians and avoid to say or do anything that might 'rock the boat.' Their comments are foolish! Do not pay attention to such!

I was persecuted and in the end medically discharged as a Naval Officer (with also one year duty on the USS John Kind - DDG-3, based in Norfolk, Va, at the time) with the Royal Netherlands Navy, after having finished the Naval Academy.

I functioned fine and had no problems until I was doing my training to be a tactical officer on Long Range Maritime Aircraft based on MVK Valkenburg, Netherlands (it has now been decommisioned and all LMP aircraft sold...) where I drove around with a postcard size sticker of a red hand on a white background with the index-finger pointing heavenwards and the text "One Way Jesus!"

This made hell break loose! But very very subtle! Not like in the Sovyet Union. But becasue most Christians and people believe our countries to be free countries - even 'Christian' countries, it is worse for Christians. In the Sovyet Union everybody knew there was one enemy of the people: the Sovyet-State-system, and thus the government! To be persecuted for their Christian faith and bedischarged with a psychiatric label was common place. And the victims would be supported and loved and prayed for by their fellow Christians. They were heroes of the faith!

Not so in the so called free West...where Christians are free and not persecuted...at least..that is what most Christians and people believe...until they become victims of persecution themselves! When not they become like Job's friends type of people! I have suffered more from my so called brethren than from the unbelievers! Just follw what you knwo from the Word of God as the Holy Spirit teaches you and guides you to be right.

Isn't this part of the Pledge of Allegiance??? So what is the issue? Also, I thought our lunch breaks were unpaid, so that is not company time. We do what we desire on our breaks, provided that it does not interfere with our scheduled work hours or does not impair our performance when we return.

If he was Muslim or Jewish and had to wear Muslim or Jewish attire or roll out his mat to pray at lunch time would he have come under fire for that? Why do I think I know the answer to my question already.....

The words on the button, according to the article, are from the Pledge of Allegiance. That was my instant thought as I read the article. Not that it was related to religion of any sort. Once the employee stated the purpose of his wearing the button, the issue should have been squashed. According to the article, the employee didn't wear the button to attempt to "save souls" while at work. Most customers probably didn't even notice the button so who was the employee harming. I don't understand the justification for him losing the job.

Well, I use to work for home depot for a year and this is the clothing you can wear. Uniform example: jeans, skirt, shirt, comfortable footwear, and your orange apron.
Jewelry example: earrings, I even seen the men with earrings, I had my cross necklace, not no big giant one, I wore my pretty angel pins. you can't where a what would Jesus do shirt or cap, nor a big button of christian words, what you do on your lunch break is what you do, I read my bible, I didn't bring a big giant one I had my little one, reading it in the break room, and know one said anything to me about it. This is a little run down on Home Depot. Store mangers are different everywhere. I am sure the customer were not complaining about his button.
